Plymouth Grand Voyager, 3.8L, 1996, 140,000 miles. Intermittent Transmission problem, thus far happened only during summer months, after 75-100 mile trip, not sure if temperature related. The transmission would suddenly shift lower, RPM rise, no other symptom is noted, other than engine check light comes on. Stopping engine for 10 min, disconnect the battery to reset the computer, removes the problem for 100 miles or more; sometimes, we would not realize the problem for months, but when least expected it comes back. Is the transmission about to go kaput or is there a fix, and because the problem is so rare how does one check if the fix alleviated the problem.

I'd be curious to know what code or codes appear when the check engine light comes on and whether the transmission speed sensors are implicated. (P0500, P0720)
