my battery won't hold a charge. when I jump start it and run it, the lights go dim shortly thereafter and the electrical guage reads discharge. Is it the battery or alternater. I know thje voltage regulator is fine.

How do you know the regulator is ok?

This charging system is extremely reliable and easy to diagnose.
