how do you set the distributor timing and to what degree?

Put engine no.1 piston on its compression stroke/TDC and line the markings at the vibration damper to 0/TDC and verify that the rotor is pointing to the no.1 cap tower-Now hook-up the timing light and adjust the ignition timing to 12 deg BTDC
