The check engine light can come on for several reasons. The best way to diagnose an OBDII car is to read the faults out with an OBDII code reader. There are several auto supply chains that will perform this service at no charge. It may be something as simple as failing to properly secure the fuel cap in which case you could reset the fault and be on your way, without the check engine light being on of course!
