What is the process for troubleshooting starter issues (through replacing the starter if necessary) for a beginner mechanic?

Hold key in start position and look for power at small terminal mark ( S ) on the starter solenoid. Power there starter is defective. No power track it back to the key-starter relay, neutral safety switch/TRS, and ignitiion switch.

Is this a manual or auto?
