1998 Plymouth Breeze Irregular shifting

It will shift fine then sometimes stick in a lower gear! Also, the automatic downshift is harsh, even to the point the tires will squeel. Any thoughts?

Check engine light on? might want to have it scanned to see if the PCM stored any codes pertaining to the transmisison. If not light it could be a mechanical problem which would require a trip to a trans shop
