1998 Plymouth Breeze Engine Knocking

My 1998 Plymouth breeze has an engine knock that gets worse as you accelerate. The knock was just a little but then I had to replace the fuel filter and now the knock is louder and more. Can you please help me? I have a 2.0 L engine

Hi:
Does the sound seem to come from the top or the bottom of the engine? Has the check engine light come on? Also, is the oil clean and full?
