first thing that happened was my odometer stopped working completely, then a wekk or two later so did the speedo. Do I need a new speed sensor or a new gauge?

I believe this year still has a speedo cable. If you look behind the dash, you will see it plugging into the back of the speedo. Remove it, and try to turn the cable on the inside. If it turns freely, the cable is broken and needs replaced. If you can't turn it, the speedo has internal problems and needs replaced.
