Transmission problem
1989 Plymouth Acclaim 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic unknow miles

My Plymouth Acclaim won't go into gear. I will put it in reverse, back up, and when I put it back into drive, it will rev up high and then eventually kick into gear. It happens at stop signs and stop lights as well. I push on the gas pedal, it revs but doesn't move, and then it kicks into gear. What could the problem be?

Hi:

Truly, it sounds like it's low on fluid. When you check it, the engine needs to be at operating temp. If the fluid is full, what is its condition? Has it been serviced? The filter may be causing a problem or the valve body could need cleaned.

Let me know what you find.

Joe

Well, thank you for your advice. It was definitely low on fluid. Which was strange because we had just recently checked all the fluids in the car. It was low on oil too. It was practically bone dry. So there must be a leak somewhere.
