There is a certain amount of movement on the pedal before the clutch engages. Can I adjust the cable? The pedal is lower to the floor than usual.

This should be a non adjustable hydraulic clutch. If the drive is taken up with the pedal well off the floor the clutch will be worn and a new clutch will probably be required. If the pedal feels soft and spongy you may have air in the system and you will have a leak in the master or the slave cylinder.

Thank you. It is neither of these two things. It seems as if there is free play before any clutch movement and as far as I can see there is no adjustment on the cable. It seems as though the cable has stretched. I can push the clutch pedal down to the floor and it only just about activates if I remove the carpet thereby pushing slightly further to the floor I can select the gears more easily.

Are you sure that it is a cable clutch? My information says that it is hydraulic.

Hi, it is definitely a cable clutch. I have just cured the problem. Under the hood of the engine compartment on the inner bulk head just below the wipers the cable goes through the bulk head. There is a thick rubber washer and star shaped nut, which was loose I tightened it by hand and now the play on the cable has gone. The clutch pedal has come up and now to select gears it is not necessary to depress clutch to the floor.
Just letting you know in case anyone else has this same problem. Thank you for your help and Merry Christmas!

That is good. That was a case of do not always believe what you read, one reference I was looking at said that it was a hydraulic clutch, you just never know until you see some things with your own eyes.
