Vehicle listed above is an xls model. Does the crankshaft require a pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft for the transmission output shaft to fit into?

Yes. There is a pilot bearing. Here is a link to a parts website and as you can see in the clutch kit, the pilot bearing is included:

https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/ford,2011,escape,2.5l+l4,1446839,transmission-manual,clutch+kit,1993

I also included the process that shows when you line up the clutch you can see the bearing is installed.

Let us know if you need more info. Thanks

Hello, I'm Danny.

Yes, to answer your question there is a pilot bearing that is in the crankshaft the transmission input shaft fits into. I've attached a picture below of one that is available from the parts store AutoZone. Let us know if you need any repair guides for clutch replacement. Hope this helps and thanks for using 2CarPros.

Hello, thanks but it doesn't tell me that there's supposed to be a pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft for the transmission input shaft in specifically my vehicle.

Can you explain a little bit more why you think there may not be? Danny and I separately confirmed and found the same info. There is a pilot bearing there because if there were not you would have the input and crank going metal to metal and it would wear out in less then 100 miles.

Have you taken it apart and not found the pilot bearing? Just trying to better understand the issue so we can assist. Thanks.

Hello again.

All manual transmissions have a pilot bearing. If there was no pilot bearing within the flywheel assembly there would be so much excessive gap that the transmission input shaft would get destroyed by not being kept firmly in place. Let us know if you have any further questions about this. Hope this helps and thanks again for using 2CarPros.

Hello, I appreciate your help! I didn't know how to comment back to you so I pushed no that your comments weren't helpful so I could, but yes it is helpful! So I took the car apart because there's brake fluid leaking, replaced release bearing.

Hello again.

You mentioned you replaced the release bearing I'm thinking you meant the clutch throw out bearing. If brake fluid is leaking from the clutch system or area that could be the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder or reservoir. We have repair guides for that a well. Hope this helps and thanks again for using 2CarPros.
