2006 Peugeot 205 sticking hand brake

2006 Peugeot 205 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 44.000 miles

I put the hand brake on, then released it but the brake stayed on, and the hand brake lever clearly was not under pressure.

check the brake linings have not slipped off the shoe !!
