I recently broke my pinion and ring and I had bought a new one today. Do I need a shim on my new pinion?

Any time you replace the ring or pinion, you need to check the backlash and pinion depth. Only when you are reusing the gear set, you can get away with using the same shims.

Below is the process from the manual on how to set the backlash and pinion depth.

Please run through this material and let us know if you have questions. However, you are going to have to find a special tool set in order to set up the rear to measure this. They are readily available.

Thanks

Hi,

When you replace the ring and pinion, there is a crush sleeve on the pinion shaft, and it requires shims during setup. The shims are to properly set up the ring gear bearing preload.
If you look below, the first pic shows the crush sleeve. The remaining pics include the directions for installing and adjusting the ring gear via the shim pack.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe
