This car is sitting idle in the driveway and begins making a rapid tapping sound that has been going on for an hour.

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.com.

Can you tell me where the noise is coming from? If it is inside, it sounds like a blend air door actuator. They have plastic gears that go bad and then they will click when trying to work. Take a look at this link and let me know if it relates to your problem. If it does, I will get you the information specific to your vehicle to repair it. The link discuss what the problem is and a general overview of how they are replaced. Please note that the sound can happen when the key is turned off.

If this is not what you are experiencing, let me know where the sound is coming from.

I hope this helps. Let me know.

Take care,
Joe
