Looking to buy a used 2018 Ford Fusion that is showing this code. Everything else looked great. The dealer told me it was from sitting in the lot. The question is, does the vehicle have to be on to throw the code? And if so is it a bigger problem? I did test drive the car and it started and ran like new. No check engine light on the dash.

Welcome to 2CarPros.

I don't want to cause problems, but that code isn't from sitting in the lot. Basically, it means the (ECM/PCM), has detected a problem related to the the de-energizing process with the power relay which supplies it with power. In other words, power was removed too soon.

With that, you could experience hard starts / no start conditions or driveability issues. What can cause this is a short between the control module and the power relay, a blown fuse or fusible link, or the power relay itself. It does need addressed because it could leave you stranded.

Honestly, I feel the cause needs to be confirmed and if problems develop related to this condition, there needs to be an extended warranty on said components. I honestly don't feel sitting on the lot would cause this issue.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe

I agree with Joe. As a Ford dealer tech I see this code from time to time and it is possible to get from a low voltage situation, and wait for it. But, these cars have an issue with battery draw too excessive which leads to a dead battery when you get ready to go to work in the morning and get the dreaded "click click click". Not telling you to not buy the car, just be with eyes wide open.
