Hi, my car read codes P0016 and P0117.

Symptoms:

* Rattling noise (worse with AC/shifting)
* Check engine light on
* Car stalled twice
* Coolant leaks when added
* No overheating or smoke

A mechanic mentioned the radiator, but I’m VERY worried about the P0016 and timing.

Does this sound like a timing chain issue or something less serious?
Should I fix the coolant leak first or diagnose timing before spending money?

Trying to avoid unnecessary repairs—thank you!

Hi:

Usually, a timing chain will last the life of the engine, but they can stretch. When that happens, the timing between the crankshaft and camshafts can be slightly off.

Since there are so many miles on the engine, there is a chance it has stretched. The other thing it could be related to is a failing ECM (engine control module), but with the mileage, my guess is the chain.

As far as the leak, that needs to be repaired regardless.

When you hear the rattling, are you certain it is coming from the engine and not a heat shield under the vehicle or other loose component?

I attached a pic below showing the P0016. Take a look at the diagnosis from the manual.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe
