Usually is a fault with the vanos system. It could be oil pressure leakage due to bad seals or a fault with the sensor. Low oil level/pressure can cause this fault too.

What sensor would be most practical?

Also one of the symptoms. I have is when I go to brake it drops rpm in second to 0 while I brake.

Also it says mechanical can that be related with electronics or your saying that electronics can cause mechanical. Timing issues.

Is the engine making noise when it runs? It could be the actuator or the valve which had a problem plugging up if the oil was not changed, they have a small screen. I don't think it is the position sensor becasue you don't have the codes for that. I would try the valve first and then go from there. Clear the codes once finished.

Best, Ken
