Recently got an estimate for our car and want to make sure diagnosis is fair. Our car recently was overheating with plenty of antifreeze left in the radiator and overflow. This was the estimate: New Radiator and Cap/ Thermostat needs replaced because opening at 215 not 195 / Antifreeze to flush / Intake Manifold Gasket. We're confused as to why we need an all new radiator, as the problem seems to be a pressurized issue (which he said could be fixed by replacing the intake manifold gasket) He also said something about oil build-up contributing to the pressure issue and that's why we needed a new radiator and cap. Is that necessary? Also, these are the other things he suggests we "take care of" - Two Main Radiator Hose, Bypass Hose, and Hose going to Heater (Very Old - Crunchy feel when squeezed) Water Pump a little wobbly - so should be replaced / Oil change just as a precaution to flush throughout engine /Spark plug and Spark plug wires arching to the outside. (Misfire trouble code) We obviously don't want to neglect caring for things our car needs, however, we also don't want to pay $2100 for all these fixes if there's a bare minimum we can do to solve the overheating problem. Thanks so much for your advice. We greatly appreciate any help you can give.

The engines in these cars are notorious for blowing upper intake gaskets and that does cause oil to get all through the coolant system. Its very difficult to get sludge out of the tiny passages of a radiator. They really aren't that expensive. Most of what is being charged is labor. But id make very sure that the shop is reputable and guarantees the work before relieving myself of that much money. Check the local BBB. Don't be afraid to take his written estimate to another shop that's listed on the BBB for an opposing quote.
