Overheating radiator not leaking

I recently purchased this vehicle knowing it was getting hot, but the radiator is not leaking and the coolant shows no traces of a bad head gasket. so my question is how do I know if it is my car's notoriously crappy water pump, or if it is the thermostat just stuck?

if it heats up with in two to three minutes it is probably thermostat. when hot feel radiator for cold spots if you feel any it is bad. make sure fan are working. then have it checked for a head gasket leak.
