Overheating at idle

Just had coolant changed and I had them check the thermostat also, they said they can only confirm it is opening (which it is) not if it is functioning correctly. My issue is that when I'm sitting simply idling or stuck in traffic the temperature indicator begins to rise. Any idea what this may be? I know that overheating can cause engine damage.

Hello,

If it only rises in temperature while you are stationary with the engine running, then it could be due to an issue with the radiator cooling fans.
As the vehicle sits there is little to no air flowing thru the radiator which causes the temperature to rise, but as you start to move the air flow as well thru the radiator and bring the temperature to the correct level.

Check to see if the radiator fans are coming on. Have the engine running at operating temperature and open the hood. Observe the fans. If they do not come on then that is the issue.
If the fan is not working it can be due to a bad fan motor or fan relay or coolant temperature sensor.

Thanks, I really appreciate the reply. I was worried it was the head gasket. I will have it checked out-thanks again.

You're welcome. Keep in mind typically with a blown head gasket you will have white smoke out of the tailpipes.
