I've replaced the heater core, thermostat and water pump, was fine for about a month and started overheating. The top hose that goes to the thermostat was solid so I removed the thermostat and it's still getting hot. Also, when I try to bleed the system it's all air until I shut off the engine then I get antifreeze.

Hi,

The thermostat should be reinstalled. It will prevent the engine from reaching operating temp in a specific amount of time. As a result, you will get a code indicating there is an issue.

As far as the overheating, does it happen at highway speed as well as stop and go traffic? If it is only stop and go, are the cooling fans turning on when the temperature starts to go up?

I attached the directions for refilling the cooling system below. Note, you need to use DexCool coolant or something that is universal and can mix with it. Let me know if that wasn't done.

Take care,

Joe

It's only when the vehicle stops after running for 15 or so minutes the fans definitely kick on and sometimes help and sometimes don't. I used a universal antifreeze that was compatible with the vehicle.

Hi,

Okay, good. The wrong coolant mixed with DexCool can cause a major issue. So, if I understand correctly, it doesn't overheat at highway speeds. Instead, it happens when you stop after driving 15 minutes or so, and the cooling fans are working.

Don't laugh, but make sure when it gets hot that neither the upper or lower radiator hoses have pinched shut restricting coolant flow.

If that is good, then I have another suspect. You indicated in the first post that when you add coolant, air keeps coming out even though you had it full. Did you use the bleeder to eliminate trapped air in the system? If you did, then does the radiator appear corroded inside? Does the heater work?

Let me know those. Also, I need you to check for a possible head gasket issue. Have you ever noticed any white smoke from the exhaust? Does the coolant ever bubble before the engine overheats?

Sorry for so many questions. Do me a favor. Take a look through these links and let me know if anything mirrors what you experience and if you are able to perform the tests in the second link.

One other link I feel you may find helpful and of interest.

The idea that it only has 60K miles leads me to think the radiator and cooling system components should be fine. That is why I'm asking you to check for a possible head gasket issue.

Let me know.

Joe
