My car is overheating. At first I thought it was the fan because the sensor was broken and the fan was not running. So I hard wired the fan to the battery but the other day it started overheating with the fan on. I am a little mechanically illiterate so I am at a loss.

It is possible, maybe even likely, that your thermostat has failed. Either bypass it or replace it. After the engine is cool, simply remove the two nuts pictured below, pull back the pipe/housing, and replace it. Before removing it, be sure to note its position. Let us know.
