Welcome to 2CarPros.

Since it's an older vehicle, are you sure ignition timing isn't an issue? I ask because of the model year. Also, the 5.0L wasn't offered in 1964. What all has been done to the vehicle?

Welcome back:

First, how far advanced is the timing set? Also, what type of fan are you using, one with or without a fan clutch? Or are you using electric? And don't laugh, but when it starts overheating, check to make sure the lower radiator hose isn't collapsed. It may not have the coil in it to prevent this.

Let me know.

Okay. I have a 1970 Cuda 440 6 pack that had the same type of issue. I hate to say it, but the only thing I could do to prevent the problem was retard the timing. I believe I left it at 12° BTDC. Like you, I had it in the 20's first and experienced the same issue. I have both an electric fan and the factory direct mount fan on the water pump with everything new, it still overheated.

I do have one last question. Did you do anything to change compression ratio?

Just bored 30 stock type pistons compression cam says to run as much advanced timing as the starter will stand. I have tried to retard the timing down to 15 it won’t run. They say to run total time at 36 dig. I set total to 36 and idle time is at 25.

Exhaust shouldn't be an issue then. The only thing I can think of at this point is the fuel mixture, but that's a long shot.

That actually sounds like a good idea. If that doesn't cool it, I'm not sure what will.

If you get a chance, let me know the results.

You are very welcome. I'm really interested in knowing if the radiator does it for you.

The radiator and stock fan done the trick. Electric fans don’t pull enough air.

Welcome back:

That's good news. Now I have to try it the one I've been working on. LOL I had electric fans but when it was heating up, I put the standard fan back on with no change. I guess the radiator is next.

Take care and have a great weekend.
