Often times, damage is done to the evaporative emissions system (EVAP). It is caused by raw fuel being forced into it where only fumes should be.
With that in mind, There are a few things that may have happened. What I need you to do is have the computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. That will tell us which component has caused the light to come on and then we can focus on it.

I realize most people do not own a scanner. However, most parts stores will do it for free. Have that done and let me know what codes are found.
