Hey guys, I recently (last week) bought this car it has a duratec engine and has 14600 0km, It was last service at about 136000 km.
Last night I started up the car and for some reason the revs jumped straight to about 3000 and sat around that. I did not really think much of it and started driving home (was at work only about 3 km journey) on the way home the engine warning light came on and the automatic transmission warning light started flashing, and whenever I push down on the clutch the revs would jump up to about 4000 rpm again and then when the clutch is disengaged the car feels like it is pulling itself. It then started sort of 'spluttering' with my foot on the accelerator at about 3000rpm it would fluctuate about 300rpm either way, would not accelerate anymore and it sounded like it wanted to stall/losing power. My knowledge of cars is pretty shallow as I am more of a motorbike person. Any help you could give would be much appreciated, before this the car was driving fine and I did not see any problems with it.

Check for a vacuum leak like hose off/broken. Clean throttle plate with choke cleaner on both sides and IAC hole. If the light is still on get it scanned for codes. Here is a great link to information on scanning for codes on how you can scan for codes yourself.

HMAC300, Thanks for the help I checked the vacuum hoses from what I can tell they are all connected and I i couldn't find any obvious leaks. I looked at the Throttle body yesterday and checked the throttle plate and it didnt look too bad but I gave it a clean up anyway with a clean rag but I didn't use carb cleaner on it though, so I may have to take another look at that. Also cleaned out the air intakes and filters and checked all the fluids just to be safe and so far no change in the problem. Unfortunately I cant get hold of anything to scan the codes so looks like it may have to be a trip to the mechanics.
