Overheating

2006 JEEP LIBERTY

This vehicle has 2.8l turbo diesel. When driving the temperature gauge which is normally at 1/2 will go to 6/8 or so then return to 1/2. Do you think that it may be my coolant temperature sensor?

Good afternoon.

I would be more inclined to think it may be the thermostat.

Make sure you have sufficient coolant in the system first. beyond that, I would suspect the thermostat.
