had lower grill replaced afterwards outside temperture reading only shows -40 nothing found in owners manual.

That is the default reading when the air temperature sensor is disconnected or a wire is cut. Given the recent service, the old sensor might have been missing and the wires were torn off. The sensor could still be on the old grille.
