Outer rear axle saver wheel bearing

Had to grind the outer race to remove the bearing and the rag I stuffed in the axle tube slid up to the inter bearing. My question is, how do I get all those shaving's out of the bearing and tube? Thanks

Good evening,

You will need to remove the cover from the differential and flush out all the debris down the tube.

No metal can get to the carrier. If it does, it will damage those bearings as well.

I use brake Kleen. Great product.

You will need around 8 cans.

Got everything cleaned out reinstalled bearings and the left rear axle was hard going in. Had to tap on it, to get it in far enough to put C- clip back on. Had to pry it out to lock it in place. Is this normal or do I have a problem?

You have a problem. It may be a little difficult to get the clip on but otherwise, it should slide in and out easily.

Does it go through the new bearing easily?

Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
Open In New TabZoom/Print

Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
Remove the rear cover and gasket. Refer to Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement.
Remove the pinion shaft locking bolt.
On axles without a locking differential, remove the pinion shaft.

On axles with a locking differential, remove the shaft part way. Rotate the case until the pinion shaft touches the housing.

On axles with a locking differential, use a screwdriver, or a similar tool, in order to enter the differential case and rotate the lock (1) until the lock aligns with the thrust block (2).

Remove the brake drum.
Open In New TabZoom/Print

Push the flange of the axle shaft in toward the differential.
Remove the C-lock from the button end of the axle shaft.
Remove the axle shaft from the housing

It does go in easy, until the couple of inches then I have to tap on it or turn it until the axle is all the way in.

It has no in and out movement like the right side does.

As long as you got the pin installed, then you are good. Some have play and some do not.
