why does the light s blinks? does changing gear oil damage the transmission?

the blinking light is telling you there is a fault on the transmission ... changeing the ATF on a vehicle with this amount of miles on the car, can cause more damage than do good .. unlees the fluids have been changed at regular intervals over the cars life !
