Our 02 silhouette kept overheating and would smell of antifreeze. In idle it would keep a constant temperature at times and other times it would not. The temp would bounce to almost hot, then back down to normal then hot again.(Very spuratic)
we took it to the local town mechanic who sent the heads in to get checked and we were told that they were bad, but they had a set on the shelf that would work. ($364) after the heads and intake and head gaskets and $1400 the temp still rises in park when the van is idling, there is a strong anti freeze coming from the motor compartment. But when going down the road, the temp is fine.
any help will be GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thx

Typically, airflow across the radiator fins will cool it down in average temperatures. When idling, higher ambient temps, or A/C is on, it should be assisted by electric cooling fans. Do you ever hear or observe these fans being on? A real quick check of the fans, turn the A/C on and the fans should be on to some degree, when the compressor is cycled on, for sure. The smell of coolant is also a concern, is it getting hot and boiling over, is it ever low and requires coolant to be added?

SAme problem. One electric fan was running, the other was not, so it would start to overheat. Found a short in the wires going to one of the fans, right between the two fans. Cut out bad wire and spliced. Fixed problem.
