Hesitating as it accelerates

Engine Performance problem
2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

My 2000 oldsmobile silhouetter acts like it is hesitating as I give it gas going down the road. I can hear what sounds like a whistle if I give it more gas to see if it will straighten up. My RPMs jump up and down as it is doing a jerking motion like it wants to go but wants to quit. Sometimes I hear it back firing. If I let off the gas a bit sometimes it corrects itself and runs good. Can someone please tell me what I should do first maybe step by step so I can get this fixed. This just started Aug. 4, 2009 right after I filled up my vehicle with gas to go on vacation. I want to keep my vehicle running. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

It sounds like you have a plugged catalytic converter which is not allowing the exhaust to exit the engine but to confirm the problem lets follow this guide.

Please run this test and get back to us.

Cheers, Ken
