1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette when I turn it on it idles fine but when I try to accelerate it backfires. It will die and then I will have to sit there for a minute or two before it will start going again. I get about 10 miles down the road and it happens again. It has the worst problems trying to go up hills.

sounds like the catalytic converter is no good and in need of replacement
