1998 Oldsmobile Silhouette V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My engine just started sputtering badly yesteday on a short trip. Before this, my "your coolant level is low" light came on so I added water to the empty resivior. The service engine soon light has been going on and off forever but always come on when I take this two hour trip on the interstate. Now it's sputtering so badly on idle and take off that I am afraid it's going to stall on me. Any ideas what it is?

Have you had the computer scanned for codes? Have you checked for vacuum leaks, fuel pressure issues, and when was the last tune up?
