1986 Oldsmobile Regency 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic n/a miles

why would a spark fly from under the spark plug wire cover, and arc to the distributer holding nut. ???
happened out of the blue.

Either there is a crack in the distributor cap or the plug wire is bad. I would replace both with the rotor.
