Transmission fluid in Radiator

I flushed my radiator and have tranny oil in it. It was a reddish color. I am planning on adding a transmission oil cooler and bypass the line that goes into the radiator. Do I need to use an oversize cooler to make up for not running it in the radiator? Also I flushed the radiator with Prestone Super flush, but I dont think it removed all the oily residue. Is there a degreaser product I can use?

Hi there,

Depending on what you do with the car re towing and the such. If you tow use a bigger cooler if possible, realy the bigger the better when it comes to oil coolers. you may also want to think about a thermo fan as well, remember that you are going to be placing the cooler in front of the radiator so there will be some air flow issues through tyhe radiator as well. As far as cleaning out the radiator there are a few cleaners on the market, i don't know what you have there, just ask at your local auto store they should be able to help.

You may not be able to get all of the tranny fluid out, but don't keep adding flush as it will start to do damage as the concentration of it will increase. After you replace the radiator or install a cooler, bring it to temperature and drain the radiator. Refill with water, bring it to operating temperature again and drain it. You want to get out the fluid that is stopped by the thermostat when it is closed. Another option is pull the thermostat and then operating temperature is not required.

I find that U-haul dealer can put in a cooler for about the cost of just buying one. The radiator replacement would be the smarter way to go.
