I HAVE A 74 OLDS CUTLASS 350, WITH A HOLLY 600 4 BBL CARB. THE ENGINE HAS BEEN BORED TO 30 OVER, CRANK TO TO 10 UNDER AND HEADS SHAVED 10 UNDER. THE PROBLEM IS IT CRANKS AND WANTS TO START BUT DON'T. IT STARTS WHEN I TURN THR IGNITION KEY TO START POSITION AND HOLD IT THERE. WHEN I RELEASE THE KEY, IT CUTS OUT. I HAVE CHECKED EVEYTHING I CAN THINK OF. I HAVE SPARK AND FUEL TO THE CARB. I JUST REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH AND STILL THE SAME PROBLEM. THE IGNITION LOCK SEEM TO BE OK, THERE IS NOT MUCH PLAY IN THE LOCK. DON'T KNOW WHAT ELES TO TRY.

I remember back in the 70s gm products had a black or grey box in the steering column that had rod going from the switch down to it and when the box goes bad the car won't start. Pop the covers off the bottom of the column and follow the rod down to the box it has a bunch of wires that plug into it. You can turn the key and the rod should move as you turn the key. Thats the only thing I know that could be the problem. Let me know
