I just changed the starter on my new Oldsmobile 88. I took the old one to AutoZone and they checked the starter and confirmed that it was bad. I purchased a new one, I placed everything where it went and reconnected the battery. When I tried to turn the car on, I heard this loud grinding noise. What is causing it and what can I do to fix it?

U needs to shim the new starter so it meets up with the flywheel teeth
Or ask for a new starter
Good luck

Where is the flywheel located and how would I know if I shimmed it to meet with the flywheel without constantly trying to turn the car on?

When u trying to start the car
Starter is trying to engage with the flywheel to turn it and that’s how engine spin and crank
Most aftermarket starter come with shims in the box they like long flat washers they go between the starter and engine
Also try to loosen the starter bolts make sue it in place then torque it down equally if all don’t work get a diff starter
