I understand all the issues regarding the Intrigue and its air pump and associated valves and water intrusion. What I would like some info on is what would cause the pump to come on while driving, long after the engine has warmed up? From what I have read the pump only comes on during engine start-up to force fresh air through the exhaust to reduce emissions. Lately, I have noticed the pump cycling two or three times during a trip followed by the SES light coming on. The light then goes out after several trips. Why is the pump coming on during normal driving conditions?

It is most likely being told to come on by the PCM.You need to have it scanned for codes to see which direction to head in for diagnosis

I am getting a recurring P0410 DTC. I have inspected the pump along with the AIR shut-off valves, vacumn lines and vacumn control solenoid. The pump housing is very suspect - I can almost pull it apart with my hands. And when it is operating, it has a very loud high-pitched whine. More than likely, I'm going to order and replace the pump. You mentioned that the pump is likely being told to come on by the PCM. From what I've read it should only come on during a cold engine start to reduce start up emissions. What would cause the PCM to tell the pump to come on after the engine is warm and the car is moving? I know more than likely the pump is part of the problem. I would just like to be sure the PCM or some sensor isn't at fault and telling the pump to come on when it shouldn't. Thanks.

If it doesnt see the exhaust emisisons react properly when the AIR is commanded on it will/can continue to test itself. Check for ground at the AIR vacuum control solenoid when the motor is running. If it has it but isnt passing vacuum through, the solenoid is bad which can also cause the code. The check valves where the AIR hoses connect to the exhaust manifolds must be working too, if exhaust can travel back into the AIR system it will set the code as well
