Transmission problem
1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue 6 cyl Automatic 170000 miles

Over the past 2 months, my Olds has randomly given me problems with hard shifting of every gear. It's only happened 3 times and each time I have been driving the car for a while. All of a sudden, each time the gears shift, it almost feels as though I hit a pothole. Once I turn the car off, it doesn't happen again. I'm guessing it's something electrical, but not sure.

Hello,

Thank You for the Donation.

When was last Transmission Filter and Fluid Change?

Is Engine Light on? If so go by your local parts store and have codes pulled. Write them down and Post here iin forum.

The last fluid and filter change was around 150,000 miles. The engine light isn't on, but the check vehicle light comes on every now and then. The car also has ABS issues, so I always assumed it was for that. I tried Autozone but they only can scan for the check engine light.

Ok, the ABS should be a totally separate light - usually Yellow Letters ABS.

Now I believe the Check Vehicle Light on yours is the same as a Check Engine Light. However, does yours have a separate Check Engine Light with a Check Vehicle Light? If not then go back by the parts store and ask them to pull codes, write them down and post them here for further diagnosis and testing.

Yes, the ABS is a seperate light, its the "anti-lock" light on my dash.

I have both a "check engine" and "service vehicle" light on my car. The engine light is not on and that's what I was told at Autozone is needed to pull codes with their machine. They told me they cannot pull "service vehicle" codes. I'm thinking it needs a computer at a shop or dealership.

The reason I suspect the hard shift to be something electronic is because it is a somewhat rare occurance and it goes away as soon as I restart the car. Plus, the Intrigue is notorious for electical problems.

Do you think it could be some kind of fuse or relay issue?

Actually I was thinking a Shift Solenoid. However, with that year they will normally turn the engine light on.

And since it appears to be what is called an Intermitant Problem it will usually turn the engine light on when it happens and once it clears up the engine light will go off.

Would you either go back to AutoZone and have them go ahead and pull codes or go to a different parts store and have them do it. And post them here in forum.

The Intermitant code should still be logged in the computer as a Pending Code.

Since I am not sure of the difference between the Engine Light and Vehicle Light I will ask my fellow techs and get back with you.

Ok, from the responses I got from my fellow techs, it look like you will need to take it to a shop to get the codes read for the Check Vehicle Light.

And they will charge a fee for pulling the codes. Not sure how much but in my area the garages charge between $70 and $90.

And without the codes I cannot give you an accurate diagnosis and possible repair proceedures.

I can start giving test proceedures, which will probably take some time to do, days or even weeks to get through and find the problem.

Let me know how you want to proceed.
