1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass fuel gauge

The fuel gauge is working backword the gauge hits the bottom of the pin when the car is on. When the car is off the needle on the gauge drops as it would when the car is off

Hi:
chances are the float is bad on the fuel pump. The problem is, it's part of the pump and is located in the tank. Most likely, you will need to replace the pump assembly and remove the tank to access it.

I've seen that happen before. Stop at your local dealer and have them perform a sweep test on the cluster. By what your describing its not the level sensor. If it was the level sensor it would be bouncing all over the place. Sounds to me like you need a new IP cluster
