Engine Mechanical problem
1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I am 17 and have been havin problems with my cutlass. To get it started I have to take the air filter off and put my hands over the carb to choke it out. Once I have it started if I try to put it in gear it will stall out. What are your thoughts about it. Any tips would be great. Thanks

Hi:
First, I don't recommend placing your hand over the carb. The engine can backfire through there and it will burn you. Second, it sounds like you have a problem with the choke. Once started and still cold, the choke still will remain partially closed until the engine warms up. Does the car run well once it's warm? Is the linkage to the choke attached? Is the choke run electrically or by a t-stat?

Hi:
I feel confident the thermostat has nothing to do with it. When the engine is cold, does the choke close? Also, have you checked for vacuum lleaks?
