Electrical problem
1991 Oldsmobile Bravada 123000 miles

About a week ago, I went to start the car and all lights on dashboard lit up and then EVERYTHING cut off. The engine never even made a sound as if it was going to turn over. No clicks, no nothing. Then the key was stuck in the on position. Called husband who came and was certain he did not have the battery cables crossed in anyway, but we tried to jump it anyway. Fried the cables. The next day--Called AAA. He used his charger and it cranked so we drove it right to Advanced Auto. They check things with meters and such and explained we needed a new battery. Bought it. They installed it and checked everything. The old battery had a bad cell.

I noticed the voltage gauge showed above the middle line of 14 v. I figured it was becasue we had a fresh new battery. I expected it to regulate as I drove and it did not.

The other day while coming to a stop, all of the lights on the dashboard lit up and blinked while the radio was cutting out. That lasted a few seconds. I forgot to mention it to hubby. This morning-- it happened again. As the radio cut off all the lights lit up on the dashboard while I was coming to a stop. Moments later it happened again while I was slowing down to turn into the driveway, and everything was blinking and the radio cutting out as I pulled in.

I did not notice if the engine was reacting in anyway as I was at a complete stop in the driveway. The battery indicator gauge still read a little above the middle 14v.

What do you think? I am worried to drive anyhwere now, afraid of breaking down at a busy intersection or something.

Just need some clues to zero in on what may be going on.

The charge indicator should be between 13.5 - 14.9 volts. But I need you to forget about the battery indicator in the dash. That may be defective. If you can go back to Advance Auto, have them test your electrical system which will include the battery, starter and alternator.

Also, if you fried the cable when your husband jump-started the vehicle, there is chance that he crossed the cable. Ask him to check the power distribution center under the hood, and make sure that all fuses are OK.
