how do i find out what the problem is and how do i fix it? what types of tools do i need?

Is the engine running correctly? Are you sure it's stuck in first gear?

If so, you need to have the computer scanned for trouble codes to determine if it's a sensor problem or internal engine problem. Also, make sure the trans fluid is full and clean.
