Are you saying it cranks good, but won't start? If so, have a helper crank it, while you visually check for spark at the plugs. If that checks out, use a gage and check fuel pressure. Some of the national brand autostores used to loan out a fuel pressure gage, if you don't have one. I'm not sure what noise you heard, if you suspect internal engine damage, cranking may not be a good idea. Can you turn the crank by hand? Any noise or fell anything. If your fully obd1 compliant, check for trouble codes.
To check for spark at the plugs, pull spark plug wire off spark plug, use a known good spark plug or spark tester in the boot, ground metal part of plug/tester to metal part of engine, engine cranking. Watch for spark.
