During acceleration the car will surge, when gas is pushed a bit more it responds fine then if speed is kept at a steady point then accelerated again it will studder. I.E 40 mph then slowly accelerating to 45. Happenes after car is warmed up and been driven for a bit. I have been told it needs a tune up, the egr valve could be bad? My gas mileage had suffered badly to, before this 330 miles to a tank now 220 to 250 a tank.

Possible causes could be one of the following:

Oxygen Sensor
Dirty fuel injectors (cleaning the injectors often fixes this).
Bad MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor
Bad TPS (throttle position) sensor
Bad or dirty MAF (mass airflow) sensor
Low fuel pressure (leaky fuel pressure regulator or weak fuel pump)
Vacuum leaks (intake manifold, vacuum hoses, throttle body, EGR valve)
Bad gasoline (fuel contaminated with water or too much alcohol)

Sometimes, what feels like a hesitation is actually ignition misfire rather than lean misfire. The causes of ignition misfire may include:

Dirty or worn spark plugs
Bad plug wires
Weak ignition coil
Wet plug wires
Coil and Rotor
