2003 Oldsmobile Alero Intermitted Turn Signals

When the car is cool, and you flip on the turn signals they will blink once, maybe twice, before they click off and do nothing. Took it to a mechanic friend and he thinks its either the relay or the multifunction switch. If the car is warmed up they usually work all the time. Is there a way to tell whether its the relay or the multifunction switch? Is the multifunction switch a dealer only part?

I would suspect faulty flasher relay, fail much more often then the actual switch. its much cheaper and easier too. you can learn how to test a relay at http://www.2carpros.com/how_to/how_do_i_check_a_relay.htm
