1997 Oldsmobile Achieva wont star

i have a 97 achieva
when i would start my engine in the morning it would idle very fast but after it was driven for a few minutes it would be ok
i went to start it this morning and and wouldnt kick over i tried stepping on the gas pedal to see if that would get it to start and nothing i can smell the gas .
from what i can tell im not getting any spark any suggestions would be great

Has the check engine light come on? Also, have you actually checked to see if you are getting spark?
