Hello, I have noticed a rattling sound coming from the ac compressor. When the ac clutch engages the rattling stops. My question is. Does that mean the bearing is bad and can I change out the clutch assembly without dumping the freon.

If you only replace the clutch, you don't have to evacuate the system. However, are you sure the clutch is bad? It sounds like it is working other than a rattle. As far as the bearing, you will have to evacuate the freon to replace it. However, a bad bearing usually only makes noise when the clutch is engaged.
