My steering wheel can spin in complete cirlces and I am unable to turn. What could the problem be

You could have broke the joint at the base of the column, had a rack and pinion failure or broke tie rods. It definitely needs to be inspected to determine what happened. If you car has an air bag, then the spinning would have ruined the clockspring in the column now also.
