1990 Oldsmobile 88 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

The "Service Engine Soon" light on the dash has been coming on and off at various times while driving fast or slow. The manual said that it means there's a problem with the emissions control system. I need to know what I can do to fix the problem before it gets worse. I can't afford to take it to a shop. Please help.
